The Power of
THEATER IN RECOVERY
Getting sober takes away a lot. The drink or the drug goes, and so do the routines, the friends, and sometimes the person you thought you were. What's left is a lot of quiet, and a lot of time.
Theater fills some of that space. You show up to rehearsal because people are counting on you. You learn lines, miss cues, laugh at yourself, and try again. For a couple of hours you get to be someone else, and some nights that's exactly what you need. Other nights, a character says something you've been trying to say for years.
Second Chance Players is made up of people in recovery, LGBTQ+ folks, people who've been through trauma, and the people who love them. Nobody has to explain why they're here. We're not a therapy group. We're a theater company, and we take the work seriously. But we've watched what happens when someone who hasn't trusted anybody in a long time steps onstage with a cast that has their back.
Here's some of what we see:

Confidence. Getting through opening night does something for a person that's hard to get anywhere else.

A new way to see yourself. Recovery can start to feel like your whole identity. Theater reminds people they're also funny, talented, and braver than they knew.

Real friendships. A cast becomes a family pretty fast. A lot of ours stick around long after the show closes.

Showing up. Rehearsals mean being on time, listening, and working with people you don't always agree with. Those habits carry over into the rest of life.
Every show costs money: the rights, the venue, the sets, the costumes. Your donation helps keep the doors open and the lights on for the next person who walks in not knowing what they're capable of.
