Next to Normal

Book and Lyrics by Brian Yorkey

Music by Tom Kitt

Diana Goodman is a suburban wife and mother whose bipolar disorder is getting worse, and whose family is still carrying a loss none of them can name out loud. Next to Normal won three Tony Awards and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, one of only ten musicals ever to take that prize.

Second Chance Players performed Next to Normal over two weekends in October 2024 at the Black Box Theater in Frisco, Texas.

SYNOPSIS

Next to Normal follows the Goodmans, a suburban family that looks fine from the street. Inside the house, Diana is a wife and mother whose bipolar disorder is getting worse, and her husband and teenage daughter are worn down from years of holding things together. Underneath it all is a loss none of them has really faced.

The rock musical opened on Broadway in 2009 and earned 11 Tony nominations. It won three, for Best Original Score, Best Orchestrations, and Best Leading Actress in a Musical. In 2010 , it became one of only ten musicals ever awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

It's a funny, raw, and honest show about mental illness and grief, and about the people who stay. Director Michael Longhurst said it asks audiences to face "our deepest vulnerabilities whilst celebrating our capacity to endure."
